Storytellers Circle West

On Tuesday, October 13th the Chestico Museum hosted Storytellers Circle West at the museum.  The event was part of Celtic Colours Cultural Experiences series.

A large crowd was on hand and a trio of talented storytellers provided an excellent afternoon of entertainment.  Cape Breton storyteller Jim St. Clair had everyone singing along with the the fairies working song of “Sunday, Monday, Tuesday”, Newfoundlander Jim Payne had us in stitches with his story of “Jack and the Magic Punt” and in the middle of the storytelling Ireland’s Jimmy McBride was surpised by a latecomer to the museum.  The gentleman was visiting Cape Breton from Ireland and was taken aback to see Jimmy – the two had gone to school together but had not seen each other for many years!

Our treasuer, Diana Hawley made the draw and this year’s lucky winner was Lorraine MacDonald of Port Hood.  Lorraine is a member of the Historical Society and was thrilled to receive the blanket!  In the photo on the left, you can see Lorraine proudly displaying the Chestico Tartan (clicking on the picture will allow you to see a larger version of the image).

August 27 Ceilidh

The eighth and final ceilidh of the Chestico Museum’s summer ceilidh series was held at the museum on August 27th.  Entertaining were Dara Smith on fiddle, Pius MacIsaac on guitar, Hughie John Beaton on guitar and vocals and Sandy Gillis, Edgar Cormier and Gerard Walker, also on guitar and vocals.   A  good sized crowd was in an attendance and very much enjoyed the evening.  Indeed,  the group joined in on many of the evenings songs!

And so our ceilidh series have come to an end for another year.  The Chestico Museum wishes to thank all the performers who so generously donated their talents, the individuals who provided food for the lunch and all those who supported our ceilidhs through their attendance.

As well, we would remiss not to thank Marina MacIntyre who was our summer student for a second year.  Marina organizes all our ceilidhs – from obtaining the talent and lunch to advertising the event and emceeing the show.  Thank you Marina for all your hard work!

Below are some photos from our last ceilidh of the season.  Enjoy!
