Our Newsmaker Series continued Monday June 15 with a very special young man. Ten year old Brandon MacKenzie was diagnosed with a brain tumour in March and has undergone 28 radiation treatments in Halifax. Brandon’s mother, Heather spoke eloquently of the family’s journey – from initial diagnosis through his radiation treatments. All the while Brandon’s upbeat and positive attitude has been an inspiration to his family, his community and to other patients at the hospital.
Brandon was required to wear a mask during his radiation treatments and he requested that it be painted like the mask of his favourite WWE wrestler, Rey Mysterio. Brandon’s story caught the attention of Rey Mysterio and Brandon was thrilled when the wrestler not only phoned him but also sent him a package that included a mask he had worn in a wrestling match. Brandon and Heather brought both masks along so we could see them!
We learned there is lots in store for Brandon. He is waiting to hear back about a camp he is eligible to attend this summer – the best part about it is he can take along his brother Colby. And he also will have his wish of a cruise come true through the Children’s Wish foundation.
Brandon heads back to Halifax this week for appointments to check on his progress and we all wish him the very best. And the MacKenzies will have lots of company on the trip back to Halifax. As their way of giving back to the IWK Hospital they have been collecting new teddy bears that will be distributed to patients. As of last night, the teddy bear count was at 68!
