August 4, 2016 Ceilidh

DSCF2678The fifth ceilidh of the Chestico Museum’s 2016 summer ceilidh series was held on August 4th. We had a huge crowd in attendance for this special Chestico Days Week ceilidh and everyone was certainly well entertained!

The talented Stephanie MacDonald played fiddle and she was beautifully accompanied by Amanda MacDougall on piano.

Stephanie and Amanda provided music for Amanda MacDonald who showcased some wonderful step dancing. Amanada was later joined by Eilidh Campbell and Burton MacIntyre even got up and showed us a few steps!

The Campbell Sisters (Mairinn , Eilidh and Seonaid) were with us and are a real treat! They play piano, fiddle and guitar and also step dance and sing wonderfully well.

Frances MacEachen was also with us to share a number of Gaelic songs that were beautifully done. Frances also sang with her daughter Lily.

And last but not least, we had our own summer student Kati van Zutphen who brought along her guitar and sang for us. What a talent!

We had a chance as well to introduce the 2016 Chestico Couple – Sadie & Edgar Spears – who were in attendance. Best wishes to Sadie & Edgar as they celebrate their 50th anniversary!

It was a most enjoyable evening. You can view some photos of the evening on our Facebook page. You can also watch videos of Stephanie & Amanda, the Campbell Sisters, Amanda step dancing, Frances & Lily, Eilidh and Amanada dancing and Kati!

2016 Chestico Couple

5066The Chestico Museum and Historical Society is pleased to honour Sadie and Edgar Spears as this year’s Chestico Couple.

Sadie was born in Rockingham, Nova Scotia to Evelyn (Lynch) and John Angus MacLean. When Sadie was just a young girl her family moved back to the MacLean family home in Mabou Harbour.

Edgar grew up in Port Hood. He is the son of Charity (Dort) and Rob Spears.

Sadie and Edgar met at a dance in Port Hood. Two years later wedding bells rang for the couple. They were married in St. Mary’s Church, Mabou on August 13, 1966. The best man was Angus MacLean, the maid of honour was Evelyn Hawley (the future Mrs. Angus MacLean!), the groomsman was Lloyd Spears and the bridesmaid was
Thelma Hawley.

After their marriage, Edgar and Sadie settled in Port Hood. Edgar worked for a time at the water plant but has spent the majority of his working life in the fishing industry. Sadie worked at Mary’s Hill Home in Mabou and more recently at a Group Home in Port Hood.

Sadie and Edgar raised a family of 3 sons and 1 daughter – Robbie, Kim, Larry and Garth. Today they are also blessed with 15 grandchildren.

Sadie and Edgar both remain busy with work but they do enjoy going camping when the opportunity arises. They also enjoy spending time with their grandchildren.

Sadie and Edgar, we are pleased you accepted our invitation to be this year’s Chestico Couple. Enjoy the experience and accept our congratulations as you celebrate fifty years of married life!

July 28, 2016 Ceilidh

DSCF2664The fourth ceilidh of the Chestico Museum’s 2016 summer ceilidh series was held on July 28th.

Our previously announced fiddler and accompanist were unable to attend due to a scheduling conflict. John Donald Cameron and Cathy Hawley graciously agreed to take their place and they played to a most appreciative crowd!

We were also pleased to welcome The Boys from the Hood – Edgar Cormier, Sandy Gillis and Gerard Walker – who were in fine form had everyone singing along with them! John Donald was even able to share a fun story about Edgar!

It was a wonderful evening enjoyed by all. You can view some photos of the evening on our Facebook page. You can also watch videos of John Donald and Cathy, The Boys from the Hood and the whole group together!
