2012 Chestico Couple

The Chestico Museum and Historical Society is pleased to honour Maude and Omer Campbell as this year’s Chestico Couple.

Maude grew up in Rankinville. She was the youngest of ten children born to Jessie Agnes (Cameron) and Danny Sandy MacNeil. Maude received her education at St. Joseph’s Convent School in Mabou. She went on to study Nursing inTruro.

Omer was the sixth of eight children born to Annie Laurie (Gillis) and James Campbell. He grew up in Harbourview and received his early education at the Harbourview School. Omer then went on to study at Port Hood Academy.

Maude and Omer met at a dance in the Mabou Parish Hall. Wedding bells rang for the couple on August 14, 1962. They were married in St. Mary’s Church, Mabou by Father John Allan Gillis.

After their marriage, Maude and Omer lived in Boston for two years and Omer worked for the B.F. Goodrich Company. They then moved home to Harbourview. For 52 years Omer spent the Spring and Summer fishing and he drove a school bus for 29 years. Maude worked as a nurse at Mary’s Hill Home for 17 ½ years and she also fished with Omer for 25 years. Maude and Omer’s family grew to include four sons – Danny, Pat, Bobby and Shawn. Today they are also blessed with 7 grandchildren – Shelley, Tyler, Laura, James, Sarah,Myraand Margaret and 1 great grandchild – Noah Tyler.

Maude and Omer are now both enjoying retirement and pursing their various interests. Both enjoy four wheeling, handlining, traveling and attending concerts – particularly John Prine and Charley Pride. Omer has a workshop where he keeps busy making spinning wheels and restoring old furniture. Maude is fond of baking and is well known for her famous homemade bread!
