Port Hood was the place to be on Sunday, August 28, 2011 as we hosted a live broadcast of TSN‘s SportsCentre!
TSN came to town as part of the 2011 Kraft Celebration Tour. Last May, Roberta Watts submitted an essay detailing why Port Hood should be a stop on the tour. On July 1, the entry was selected as a Top 20 finalist and after an online voting match up, Port Hood was delared a winner! Not only did we win a TSN SportsCentre broadcast with Kate Beirness and Darren Dutchyshen and a great day of games and giveaways from Kraft, but the Al MacInnis Sports Centre received a $25,000 cheque to go toward rink improvements!
The Chestico Museum was part of the fun as well! On Saturday, after an incredible afternoon of whale watching, Kate and Darren stopped by the museum for some fiddle and square dancing lessons. The two were great sports and we enjoyed having them!
101.5 The Hawk was also on site as there was a surprise meeting between Cameron MacEachern and Kate! The Hawk took lots of great pictures at the museum that can be viewed on their Facebook page and there is also a video.
Clips of all the excitement from the Port Hood broadcast can be viewed on TSN’s video page.

ceilidhs
The final ceilidh of the Chestico Museum’s 2011 summer ceilidh series was held on Thursday, August 25, 2011. We had a big crowd in attendance and a great line up of entertainment. As this was our last ceilidh of the summer it was two hours in length and there were 7 draws for door prizes!
Dara Smith-MacDonald was our fiddler for the evening and she was accompanied by Adam Young. This was Dara and Adam’s third performance at a Chestico Museum ceilidh this year and as always, they did a fabulous job!
Our singers were the Boys from the Hood (Sandy Gillis, Edgar Cormier and Gerard Walker), Lynn Chisholm, Barbara Cameron and Louise MacIsaac. All were in fine voice and there were some collaborative efforts, including a rendition of Working Man that had everyone singing along!
Anne Beaton, President of the Chestico Historical Society, made a presentation of a gift basket to Marina MacIntyre during the ceilidh. Marina has been our summer student for the past 4 years and this was her last year with the museum as she graduates next Spring.
Marina has run the Chestico Museum Ceilidhs for 4 of the 5 years that they have been in existence. She’s done a fabulous job and we’re going to miss her at the museum.
Thank you Marina for all your hard work!
As always, photos of our ceilidh can be found on our Facebook page.
There is also video here.

The sixth ceilidh of the Chestico Museum’s 2011 summer ceilidh series was held on August 18th.
Shelly Campbell was our guest fiddler this week and she brought along Allan Dewar who accompanied her on piano. Their energetic tunes were enjoyed by all!
Hughie John Beaton had the crowd entertained with an amusing selection of songs and we were also treated to the beautiful voices of Jeannie Beks and Christine Campbell.
Part of our audience was a couple from Arkansas who were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary – Kate and Mickey Davis. Mickey just happened to have his fiddle with him and was kind enough to play a couple of selections for us. He is a wonderful player!
You can view some photos of the evening on our Facebook page.
