Summer Employment Opportunities 2024

The Chestico Museum has employment opportunities available for the 2024 summer season. The ideal candidates will excel at public speaking and engaging with members of the public, possess strong verbal and interpersonal skills and will be efficient and well organized. The ability to multi-task and strong IT skills are key requirements. Knowledge of local history is an asset.

HERITAGE PROGRAMMER/MUSEUM GUIDE

Tasks will include guiding museum tours, assisting visitors with historical and genealogical research, organizing museum events (including our weekly summer ceilidhs), creating exhibits and updating our collections database.

The position will run from May 27 until August 30, 2024. It is made possible by funding received through the Nova Scotia Student Summer Skills Incentive (SKILL) Program. This position is open to students who have been accepted at a post-secondary institution for full-time study beginning in September 2024. The position is for 14 weeks – 35 hours per week at a rate of pay of $15.20/hour.

MUSEUM ASSISTANT

Tasks will include enriching records in our collections database, assisting visitors with historical and genealogical research and assisting with museum events as required.

The position will run from May 27 until August 30, 2024. It is made possible by funding received through Young Canada Works (YCW) in Heritage Organizations. Applicants wishing to be considered for this job must be registered in the YCW in Heritage Organizations candidate inventory databank. YCW criteria state that candidates are full-time students between the ages of 16 and 30 who are intending to return to full-time studies in the next academic semester; must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or have refugee status in Canada; and be legally entitled to work in Canada.

August Gaelic & Cultural Workshops


Join us at the Chestico Museum for Bidh Sinn a’ Seannachas – Gaelic & Cultural Workshops (all ages welcome). Monday workshops cost $10 and are August 7, 14 & 21 from 9:00 until 10:30 AM. Learn Gaelic phrases, explore Gaelic song, music & dance, engage with our local lore, discover Nova Scotia’s Gaelic geography and there will be stories!

Tuesday evenings the cost is $5 for stories, conversation and tea. The presenters are:

Heritage Cookery Demonstration – August 11, 2023

A Heritage Cookery demonstration will be held at the Chestico Museum on Friday, August 11th from 10:00 to 11:30 AM. It will be presented by Mary Janet MacDonald of Tunes & Wooden Spoons and Cathy Gillies & Susan Mallette of the Chestico Museum. Light refreshments will be served. Tickets are $15. Twilight Tales Walking Tours

The Chestico Museum & Historical Society is pleased to offer Twilight Tales walking tours of Port Hood.

Chestico Museum guides in historic costume (John & Cathy Gillies) will bring the past alive as they highlight the people, events and sights of Port Hood’s past. Hear tales of the sea, phantom ships, amazing rescues and ghostly encounters. For those who have taken the tour in the past, there will be a selection of new stories.

This year the tours will be offered on Monday and Wednesday evenings.

Our Monday tours will depart from in front of St. Stephen’s – Jubilee United Church at 8 PM. This tour will include St. Peter’s Parish cemeteries. The Monday tour is offered on:

August 7th
August 14th

Our Wednesday tours will meet at the Union Protestant Cemetery at 7 PM. The Wednesday tour is offered on:

July 19th
July 26th
August 2nd
August 9th
August 16th

Please wear comfortable shoes – there will be some walking on uneven ground.

The cost for the Twilight Tales walking tour is $10 for Adults and $5 for Children under 12.

We require a minimum of 5 people for the tour to go ahead so please contact the museum to let us know if you intend to participate.
